Florida House Subcommittee on Health Quality to Hold Workshop on Advanced Practice Registered Nurses Autonomous Practice

~FANA representative will highlight the need to remove barriers for APRN’s~

Tallahassee, FL – The Florida House Health Quality Subcommittee will be holding a workshop on Wednesday, February 13, 2019, at 8:00a.m. in room 306 HOB of the Capitol to hear from experts about autonomous practice by Advanced Practice Registered Nurses (APRN).

APRN’s are comprised of Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetists (CRNA), Nurse Practitioners (NP), Certified Nurse Midwives (CNM), and Clinical Nurse Specialists (CNS).

Currently, 33 states have removed barriers for some or all APRN’s and many other states, including Florida, are considering legislation to do the same.  APRN’s play a vital role within Florida’s health care system by increasing access to health care and lowering health care costs while maintaining patient quality of care.

Under current Florida law, APRN’s must practice under the supervision of a medical doctor, osteopathic physician or dentist.

Florida Association of Nurse Anesthetists (FANA) supports efforts to modernize Florida statutes related to APRN supervision to finally catch the law up with the practice. Historically laws did not contemplate the sophisticated education and training APRNs receive today and FANA’s efforts will focus on allowing APRNs to practice to the full extent of their education and training.

Speaking at the workshop on behalf of FANA will be former President of the American Association of Nurse Anesthetists, Juan F. Quintana, CRNA, DNP.

Dr. Quintana will be available for media interviews following the conclusion of the workshop.

You may also stream the committee meeting live on the Florida Channel.
