Government Community Relations Committee Update
By: Mignon Nielsen, MSNA, CRNA, APRN
FANA Director and GRC Co-Chair

Thank you FANA members for making those in district meetings with your Senator and Representative during a very successful August Advanced Practice Registered Nurse (APRN) Advocacy month. FANA worked in collaboration with the Florida Coalition of Advanced Practice Nurses (FLCAPN) in efforts of educating and advocating to our Legislators on what we do each and every day for their constituents. There are four APRN roles (Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetists, Certified Nurse Midwives, Certified Nurse Practitioners, and Clinical Nurse Specialists) who all come together thru FLCAPN and in the month of August each APRN role made appointments with their legislators to create relationships. These relationships allow for APRNs to explain and give examples of what their daily roles look like. Giving real life experiences of how modernizing the current laws to allow full practice authority for APRNs is about increasing access to proven cost effective holistic high quality healthcare for Florida residents.

FANA had a very successful August Advocacy month that continued to flow into September and October. FANA was at the West Central Region Legislative Forum where Michelle Canale, DNP, CRNA and Erik Rauch, DNP, CRNA met with several local Legislators from the counties of West Central Region. Karla Maldonado, DrAP, CRNA and Michelle Canale, DNP, CRNA hit the grassroots trail in Saint Petersburg Florida. The office of U.S. Senator Marco Rubio (R-FL) hosted Mobile Office hours where your FANA board members Karla Maldonado, DrAP, CRNA and Michelle Canale, DNP, CRNA met with Taylor Sanchez who is Marco Rubio’s Regional Director.

Michelle Canale, DNP, CRNA and Erik Rauch, DNP, CRNA also attended the Pinellas County Legislative Forum to meet with multiple Legislators there, as well. Vernon Langford, RN, MSN, FNP-C from the FLCAPN spoke to the audience on how eliminating restriction on APRNs will have a positive impact on Florida’s economics and health. Reiterating that the Federal Trade Commission advised that “scope of practice restrictions may eliminate APRNs as a source of safe, lower-cost competition, and may restrict competition unnecessarily to the detriment of health care consumers”.

Thank you FANA and members for making the time to attend these meet and greets that provide a great opportunity to build relationships and educate Legislators on the role CRNAs play in delivering expert-level anesthesia and pain care throughout Florida.  FANA will continue to create and maintain these key relationships to advocate for your profession.
